Wisdom Teeth Information and Removal in Toowoomba

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth to appear in the mouth, usually in the late teenage years or early adulthood. For some people, these teeth come through without any issues. For others, there may be not enough space, or the teeth may grow at an angle, which can lead to discomfort or other dental problems.

At Bridge Street Dental Toowoomba, our dentists provide assessment and management options for wisdom teeth for patients in Toowoomba, Wilsonton, Highfields, Cotswold Hills and the Darling Downs and surrounding areas.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the back of the mouth. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but some may have fewer or none. These teeth are often more difficult to clean and can be more likely to develop problems if they do not come through in a favourable position.

Common wisdom‑teeth concerns

Wisdom teeth may need assessment if you experience:

  • Pain or discomfort at the back of the mouth
  • Swelling around the gums near the wisdom teeth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully
  • Food trapping or difficulty cleaning around the back teeth
  • Repeated infections in the same area

These signs do not always mean wisdom teeth must be removed, but they are a reason to have them checked by a dentist.

How wisdom teeth are assessed

Our dentists use a combination of a clinical examination and X‑rays to assess wisdom teeth. X‑rays help show:

  • The position and angle of the wisdom teeth
  • How close they are to nearby teeth and nerves
  • Whether there is enough space for them to come through
  • Any signs of infection, cysts or damage to neighbouring teeth

After the assessment, your dentist will explain the findings and discuss appropriate options.

Management and removal options

Depending on your situation, options may include:

  • Monitoring the wisdom teeth over time
  • Managing symptoms such as inflammation or infection
  • Removing one or more wisdom teeth under local anaesthetic in the clinic
  • Planning for removal under general anaesthetic in hospital when appropriate

At Bridge Street Dental Toowoomba, wisdom‑teeth cases that require removal under general anaesthetic are performed at St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital by Dr Gregory Hulme-Peake. He is an experienced dental surgeon with a special interest in wisdom teeth. Your dentist will discuss which setting is suitable for you based on your medical history, X‑rays and level of complexity.

Recovery and follow‑up

Recovery after wisdom‑teeth removal varies from person to person. Your dentist will provide individual instructions about:

  • Expected healing time
  • Pain relief options
  • Eating and drinking after the procedure
  • Oral hygiene around the area
  • When to contact the practice if you have concerns

Follow‑up appointments may be recommended to check healing and address any questions.
